Dave Matthews - "In memory of Anne”

Dave Matthews first album was 1994’s "Under the Table and Dreaming.” On the inside of the case under the CD is a picture of Dave holding a child who is handing him a flower. Inscribed on the picture is the dedication "In memory of Anne.” I’m often curious about dedications and was able to find out the following information -

Dave was born in South Africa and lived there with his brother and sisters, Anne and Jane. Dave and Jane eventually returned to the United States and Anne remained. Tragically, Anne was murdered by her husband who subsequently committed suicide on January 27, 1994.

Immediately following her death, Dave travelled back to South Africa but was forced to return to the United States due to unbreakable professional obligations. On January 29, 1994, he performed in New York where he dedicated that performance to her memory.

Anne was survived by her two children who were brought to the United States where Dave and Jane continued to raise them. The picture of the child handing Dave a flower in the CD case is one of Anne's children.

To this day Dave has yet to release any details of his sister's murder out of respect to her children.
